Why Candid Photos Matter More Than Posing Perfectly

When most people think about booking a photo session, they imagine perfectly behaved kids, perfect outfits, and everyone looking at the camera with a big smile. But let me let you in on something I’ve learned over years of photographing families, couples, and weddings:

The best moments are rarely posed.

More and more, my clients are telling me the same thing — “We just want something natural.” And I couldn’t agree more.

There’s something powerful about the in-between moments. The way your toddler tugs at your dress, the look you give your partner when you think no one’s watching, the big belly laugh that comes from a silly game, not a “say cheese!”. Those are the moments that make your story yours. And they’re the ones you’ll actually want to remember years from now.

When I look back at photos of my own kids, the ones I love most aren’t the ones where they’re sitting perfectly still. They’re the ones where they’re barefoot and sandy at the beach, arms flung around each other, or totally lost in a game. There’s joy in the mess. There’s life in the blur.

A photograph should take you back. To a season. A smell. A moment. To that split second when your baby’s hand fit in yours, or when your partner looked at you like that.

That’s what candid photography does. It freezes a feeling — not just a face.

I won’t ask you to “pose” in the traditional sense. Instead, I’ll guide you gently through movement and play — walking, talking, holding, hugging. I’ll chat with your kids, play with them, distract them, and let the magic unfold. You don’t need to perform, you just need to be present.

Because your life isn’t posed. It’s real, messy, emotional, and beautiful — just as it is. And your photos should reflect that.

So if you’re holding off on booking a session because you’re worried your kids won’t sit still, or your partner hates photos, or you don’t know how to “pose” - please know you’re not alone. You just need to show up, as you are, and I’ll do the rest.
